Subject: JoULAB releases first Early Access paper on 18 August
By undergraduates, for undergraduates, the Journal of the
Undergraduate Linguistics Association of Britain (JoULAB) is the
world’s only journal publishing solely undergraduate research in all
areas of linguistics.
We are very happy to announce the publication of our first Early
Access paper and first instalment in Vol. 2, Issue 2: Complexity and
the Phonological Turing Machine by Louis Van Steene (University of
Cambridge). Taking a minimalist perspective, this paper evaluates the
Chomskyan framework of explanatory adequacy for four prominent
phonological theories. Van Steene then likens linguistic knowledge and
its theories to a Turing machine, and looks to notions of
computational complexity and Minimalism in computer science to remedy
the over-complication of many linguistic theories.
The paper will be released on 18 August on our website,
ulab.org.uk/journal.
