Subject: Language planning and interpretation for indigenous languages of Latin America
As a Spanish medical interpreter in the Baltimore area, I often come
across native speakers of several indigenous languages from Mexico
(e.g. Mixteco), Central America (e.g. Garifuna, Miskito, Mam, Ixil,
Qʼanjobʼal, Kʼicheʼ, Qʼeqchiʼ), and South America (Kichwa). As part of
a project to raise awareness of such linguistic diversity among
hospital staff and explore ways to address the lack of indigenous
language interpreters, I've been compiling information on possible
official and/or community-based initiatives to train (and possibly
certify) interpreters for indigenous languages both in their country
of origin and in the US. I would also appreciate any information on
possible language planning endeavors to help develop medical (as well
as legal and administrative) terminology in indigenous Latin American
languages, as well as initiatives to translate medical literature
(including patient education materials) into such languages.
