Description:
Within the Philadelphia region’s only public doctoral university,
Temple’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers a Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) in Spanish American Literature, Peninsular Spanish
Literature, and Hispanic Linguistics. All applicants for admission are
automatically considered for fellowships or teaching assistantships
that include full tuition remission, medical coverage, and a stipend
of $26,000-$30,000 per year for at least five years, depending on
qualifications. Recipients of these awards will teach undergraduate
language courses that provide excellent training for academic careers.
Our placement record is very competitive.
The minimum application requirements are: (1) an undergraduate degree
in hand before the beginning of the 2024-2025 academic year; (2)
submission of a complete application by January 15, 2024 (although
late applications will be considered); and (3) high fluency in English
and either Spanish or Portuguese. Applicants from outside the US
should also submit scores from the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic
exams. We will consider any applicant who meets these criteria and
wishes to pursue advanced studies in Iberian or Latin American
literature, culture, or linguistics; a prior degree in these areas is
not required. As a department and a university, we are committed to
