Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; Pragmatics

Call Deadline: 01-Nov-2024

Meeting Description:

We invite contributions to the following panel at the 19th
International Pragmatics Conference: "Bridging Research Worlds:
Unveiling the Power of Pragmatics across Academic Domains."

Pragmatics, which originated within the philosophical domain, examines
how context influences the interpretation of meaning, distinguishing
between what is explicitly stated and what is implied (Korta, 2024).
In the realm of linguistics, pragmatics naturally interacts with other
subfields such as syntax and semantics. However, the applicability of
pragmatics extends far beyond linguistics. The focus on context and
implication makes pragmatics a valuable tool for research in numerous
fields beyond traditional linguistic studies. For instance, in fields
such as sociology (Mey, 2017), pragmatics can be employed to study
social practices and in organizational interactions, shedding light on
how language shapes and is shaped by social dynamics (Yli-Jokipii,
2010; Poggi et al., 2017).

Call for Papers:

The goal of the panel is to explore the effectiveness of the subject
(pragmatics) to interact frequently, and in many different ways, with
other fields of study. The
interactions can be explained through following questions:
 1. How varied is the interaction?
 2. Is the interaction due to some specific feature of the field of
pragmatics? If so, what would that special feature be?
 3. Or should one investigate in another direction and take the
limited uses of pragmatics and build it across in the social science
landscape?
 4. Did the need to establish legitimacy of the field forced
pragmatists to apply methods from other disciplines?
 5. What role did the interaction with other fields play in the
subject area’s development?
 6. How different theories of pragmatics influenced/influences
multiple research directions?
 7. Can we find methodologies that supports the field of pragmatics to
be accepted as a relevant social science domain?

The contention is that pragmatics can be used as a research tool or
conceptual model in any cross-discipline endeavour (Jucker et al.,
2018). While pragmatics based itself in the domain of philosophy it
has through the years crossed paths with theories, concepts, methods
from other disciplines (Jurafsky, 2006; Al-Hindawi et al., 2019). This
interdisciplinary nature of pragmatics provides a robust framework for
examining and understanding complex phenomena across various fields,
enabling researchers to investigate language use in context and
uncover the implicit meanings that shape our communicative
interactions.

We invite researchers, academics, and practitioners to submit papers
that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
1. Pragmatics in Law
The role of pragmatics in legal interpretation and courtroom
discourse.
2. Pragmatics in Organizational Communication
The role of pragmatics to understand communication dynamics within
organizations.
Pragmatics as a tool for analysing power relations and social
dynamics in professional settings.
3. Pragmatics and AI
Applications of pragmatics in natural language processing and
artificial intelligence.
Challenges and opportunities in integrating pragmatics into
computational
models.
4. Pragmatics and Psychology
The influence of pragmatics on behavioural communication delivery.
5. Pragmatics in Health Communication
The influence of pragmatics on doctor-patient communication and
healthcare delivery.
Pragmatics in the design of health communication campaigns and
interventions.

Abstracts (min. 250 and max. 500 words) should be submitted through
the conference website (https://pragmatics.international/page/CfP2025)
before 1 November 2024.
