Meeting Description:

Panel: "Multimodality in Digital Discourse: Exploring the Pragmatics
of Action in Online Spaces"

We invite contributions to the IPrA2025 panel: "Multimodality in
Digital Discourse: Exploring the Pragmatics of Action in Online
Spaces"
Submission deadline: November 1, 2024, via conference website
Organizers: Carolin Schneider (University of Duisburg-Essen) & Irene
Cenni (Ghent University)

In today's digital landscape, communication is increasingly
multimodal, seamlessly integrating text, images, videos, and other
semiotic resources to convey meaning and facilitate social actions
(Jewitt, 2017; Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2001).
This panel explores the pragmatics of multimodal discourse in online
spaces, examining how various modes interact and shape communication
practices (Herring, 2015). The rise of digital platforms and
technologies has given birth to new forms of multimodal interaction,
blending traditional pragmatic strategies with digital affordances.
Researchers delve into how speech acts, politeness, implicature, and
identity construction are adapted and negotiated in digital contexts
(Yus, 2011), where the lack of physical co-presence necessitates novel
linguistic and paralinguistic strategies to convey tone, emotion, and
intention (Dresner & Herring, 2010; Vandergriff, 2013). Moreover, the
inherent multimodality of digital communication presents unique
challenges and opportunities for pragmatic analysis. Studies
investigate how users establish shared contexts, infer meanings, and
manage ambiguity in online interactions (Herring, 2013; Sindoni,
2013), focusing on the interplay between textual, visual, and other
modal elements that constitute digital contexts (Norris 2019; Adami,
2016).

The panel invites diverse methodological approaches, including social
semiotics (Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2001), mediated discourse analysis
(Scollon, 2001), and conversation analysis (Sindoni, 2013), to explore
the pragmatics of action in digital spaces. Key areas of inquiry
include:
• Multimodal pragmatic strategies across various digital genres
and platforms, such as social media posts, memes, video comments, and
virtual environments.
• The interplay of textual, visual, auditory, and other semiotic
modes in conveying pragmatic meanings like stance, evaluation, and
interpersonal relations online.
• Methodological innovations for analyzing the multimodal
constitution of pragmatic phenomena like humor, expressivity, deixis,
and positioning in digital discourse.
• The role of technological affordances in facilitating
multimodal pragmatic strategies and shaping online pragmatic
competence.
• Implications of multimodal pragmatics research for fields like
digital literacy, inclusive design of online platforms, and
cross-cultural communication online.

Presentation Format
 • 20-minute oral presentation
 • 10-minute discussion
