Description:
The Chair for Multilingualism and Second Language Acquisition at the
Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Modern
Languages, Goethe University Frankfurt, invites applications for a
Doctoral Researcher position (65% of a full time position) funded for
three years. The position is available starting March 2025, with the
salary grade determined by the collective agreement applicable to
Goethe University.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will pursue a Ph.D. degree within the project
“Multilingual Dynamic Assessment for Language and Content Learning:
Addressing Sociolinguistic Diversity in India’s Primary Schools,”
which stems from the collaboration between the University of Cambridge
(PI: Prof. Dr. Ianthi Tsimpli) and Goethe University, Frankfurt (PI:
Prof. Dr. Jacopo Torregrossa).
One of the objectives of the project is to quantify and qualify the
use of code-mixing in pedagogical activities in government primary
schools in India. This involves using audio recordings, developing and
analysing a corpus of spoken data, and computationally modelling
code-mixing. The project will also involve the design, implementation,
and evaluation of multilingual dynamic assessment (MDA) practices in
these schools, which will be conducted by the second doctoral
researcher who will be hired for this project.
Requirements
The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:
- Languages: Excellent command of English and Hindi and/or Assamese.
- Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Linguistics.
- Research Interests: Strong interest in multilingualism, code-mixing
research, corpus studies, and computational linguistics.
- Desirable Experience: Prior empirical research, particularly in
corpus-based modelling of language data.
Knowledge of German is not required for this position.
