Linguistic Field(s): Language Acquisition; Pragmatics; Semantics;
Syntax

Call Deadline: 09-Jan-2025

Meeting Description:

This workshop aims to bring together researchers from various
theoretical and methodological backgrounds, working on the acquisition
of syntactically complex constructions that involve the interaction
with other linguistic domains, such as prosody, discourse (Information
structure, IS), and/or semantics. The workshop welcomes contributions
on both L1 and L2 acquisition, as well as on typical and atypical
language development.

Questions that could be addressed include, but are not limited to:
 • L1 acquisition: How do children acquire the syntax of complex
structures? Is it possible to identify distinct stages in the
acquisition of complex syntactic structures? How do children learn to
integrate information from the different language modules? What
factors facilitate this integration, and what obstacles do children
encounter?
 • Atypical language development: How do children with developmental
disorders differ from typically developing children in their
acquisition of syntactically complex phenomena? How do these children
acquire the interaction between the different language modules? What
specific strategies do they use to overcome challenges?
 • L2 / multilingual acquisition: How can insights from L1 acquisition
inform L2 learning and vice versa? What are the key differences and
similarities between these two groups in their acquisition of complex
interface phenomena? What factors influence L2 learners’ acquisition
of syntactically complex interface phenomena?
 • Methodology: How can we effectively define and measure (syntactic)
complexity, especially in relation to the interaction between language
modules? To what extent can quantitative methods advance our
understanding of linguistic complexity and its role in language
acquisition?

Keynote speakers: Ianthi Tsimpli (University of Cambridge) & Benedikt
Szmrecsanyi (KU Leuven)

2nd Call for Papers:

We invite submissions for oral presentations (20 minutes + 10 minutes
for questions and discussion) and poster presentations on the L1 or L2
acquisition of syntactically complex interface phenomena in
neurotypical or neurodiverse populations. Abstracts should be
anonymous (both in the body of the text and in the filename) and no
longer than two pages A4, including references and examples, with 2.5
cm margins, font size 12, single-spaced. Submissions are limited to a
maximum of one individual and one joint abstract per author (or two
joint abstracts). Abstracts can be submitted via EasyChair, using the
following link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=asci2025

! EXTENDED DEADLINE ABSTRACT SUBMISSION: January 9, 2024
Notification of acceptance: January 15, 2025
Early bird registration for authors: until February 8, 2025
Late bird registration: until March 1, 2025
Workshop dates: March 26-27, 2025
