Subject: Tibetan-speaking research assistant needed for Queens linguistic landscape study
I am a Linguistics PhD student at The Graduate Center, CUNY writing a
dissertation on the use of Tibetan on signage in Jackson Heights,
Queens in New York City. I am looking for a research assistant to
translate photos of signage with Tibetan text for me, as well as
provide additional cultural background information about language use,
script, and design. The work can be done remotely and check-ins can be
done over Zoom, by email, or over the phone.
Work can be done at your own pace; compensation of $20/hr will be
provided. An assistant who lives in Jackson Heights and has
familiarity with the neighborhood and Tibetan community there is a
plus, but not required.
Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Native Tibetan or otherwise fluent Tibetan language speaker.
Duties would include:
Working through a Google Drive folder of photos translating any
Tibetan text in the photo into English.
Supplementing translations with additional linguistic information,
noting the variety of Tibetan being used, script style, loanwords, or
other style notes where relevant.
If research assistant lives in or is familiar with Jackson Heights
Queens:
May be asked to accompany the PhD researcher on visits to the
neighborhood, familiarizing researcher with Tibetan community and
businesses.
May be asked to help recruit Tibetan speakers for semi-structured
interviews.
