Description:
The CRC1646 offers a PhD position in the project B03 "Indirectness in
discourse: interrogatives, implicit meaning and incongruence" (PIs:
Tanja Ackermann/ Jutta M. Hartmann/ Arndt Riester) B03 investigates
how non-literal meaning emerges by means of indirectness in discourse.
We examine indirect speech acts based on interrogatives and
indirectness in question-response sequences (e.g. in interviews),
adopting a cross-linguistic perspective. We look at how formal
syntactic factors (clause types), sociopragmatic variables
(politeness) and the structure of discourse
(questions-under-discussion) contribute to indirectness, which
contexts facilitate or limit such creative interpretations, and which
mechanisms allow for enrichment or conventional interpretation.
The ideal candidate has a relevant, successfully completed scientific
university degree (for example Master of Arts, Master of Sciences or
Diploma), e. g. in Linguistics with a focus in formal syntax and/or
pragmatics. Linguistic expertise in a non-indo-European language,
ideally Japanese is a plus.
