Description:
A postdoc position is open at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano,
Italy. The position is part of the project “New Perspectives on
Diphthong Dynamics” and will be filled starting on September 1, 2024
or the earliest possible date up to a maximum of 16 months (12 +
4-month extension until the end of the project in December 2025).
The acoustic phonetics project focuses on the description and study of
Sardinian (Romance language) and Tyrolean (Southern Bavarian German
dialect), and is conducted in collaboration with the Institut für
Phonetik und Sprachverarbeitung (IPS) of the
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München). The goals of the project
involve the description of vowel systems, the study of the temporal
structure of diphthongs and the construction of corpora for linguistic
documentation.
The data collection and phonetic transcription phase has been
completed, so the postdoc is expected to:
- process, prepare, and statistically analyze acoustic data;
- draft reports on results;
- conduct literature surveys as required;
- contribute to publications;
- contribute to the project's seminars, meetings, workshops and other
activities;
- coordination of collaboration with IPS in Munich.
While contributing to the entire project, the postdoc will be mainly
responsible for research on the vowel system of Sardinian. The project

Qualifications. The successful candidate will have:
- a completed PhD in Linguistics (or other language-related
disciplines);
- a solid background and experience in acoustic phonetics for the
analysis and evaluation of speech data;
- knowledge of statistical modeling with programming languages (e.g.
R);
- full proficiency in English.
Desirable qualifications.
- Experience with statistical analysis of dynamic data (e.g. temporal
series);
- Background in Romance Linguistics (language competence in
Sardinian, or Italian, is not expected);
- Advanced skills in programming and scripting (e.g. Praat, Python,
R).
