Job Title: Tenure Track position in Language Learning and English
Linguistics
Job Rank: Assistant Professor

Specialty Areas: Discipline of Linguistics; Language Acquisition;
Morphology; Syntax

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

We are seeking to fill a faculty position in the area of Language
Learning and English Linguistics. This is a regular, tenure-track
faculty appointment. Duties include research and knowledge transfer,
teaching, and administrative service.

Research profile:
We are seeking to hire a researcher with a PhD in (Applied)
Linguistics, English Linguistics, or allied field with a research
specialization in one or more areas that can inform the learning and
acquisition of English. Commitment to excellence in teaching and
supervision is expected, both at the undergraduate and graduate
levels, and both as a specialist and generalist. We particularly
welcome applications from scholars with an interdisciplinary
orientation and whose research can establish new connections with
other research areas in the department, including multi/bilingualism,
corpus or computational linguistics, language contact and change,
and/or linguistic theory more generally.
Priority will be given to candidates who provide evidence of capacity
for innovative theoretical and empirical research, including strong
methodological and quantitative analysis skills, independent of the
total number of years of experience; merits will be assessed in
proportion to the number of years since the start of the PhD. Native
or near-native competence in English is essential, including a strong
capacity for description and analysis of advanced English grammar,
ideally incorporating a contrastive perspective. Communicative skills
and interest in transferring research outcomes to the academic
community as well as society at large will also be valued. Prior
knowledge of Spanish or Catalan is not essential, but new faculty are
expected to attain a C1 level in Catalan (Common European Framework of
Reference) within two-years of being hired.

Teaching responsibilities:
The appointee will teach a total of between 120 and 180 classroom
hours annually in undergraduate and graduate courses, including final
project supervision (undergraduate, master’s and PhD dissertations).
Specifically, they will be expected to teach and coordinate teams of
co-teachers for courses in the description and analysis of English
grammar in the BA degrees offered by the School of Translation and
Language Sciences. Versatility in teaching profile is essential, and
ability to contribute to teaching needs in other areas of the
bachelor’s degrees and our Master’s in Theoretical and Applied
Linguistics will be valued.
