Description:

The School of Speech, Language, Hearing, and Occupational Sciences
(SLHOS) at the University of Montana are looking for motivated
candidates for admission to the PhD program in Speech, Language, &
Hearing Sciences

Faculty in the School of Speech, Language, Hearing, and Occupational
Sciences (SLHOS) in the College of Health at the University of Montana
(UM) is offering TWO (2) Research Assistantship (RA) Awards for
doctoral students in the Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences PhD
program. Professors Anoop Basavanahalli Jagadeesh, Ginger Collins,
Danielle Fahey, Amy Glaspey, Jenna Griffin-Musick & Catherine Off,
Jane Reynolds, & Laurie Slovarp are now accepting graduate student
applications for Fall 2025. We conduct a variety of basic science,
applied and clinical translation programs to explore the neuroscience
of hearing and aging (Basavanahalli Jagadeesh), the interaction of
literacy and social justice in later adolescence (Collins),
neurobiology of syntactic processing (Fahey), dynamic assessment and
treatment of speech sound disorders in early childhood (Glaspey),
efficacy of innovative aphasia rehabilitation service delivery models,
including Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Programs (ICAPs)
(Griffin-Musick & Off), and efficacy, innovations, and advances in
behavioral cough suppression therapy for refractory chronic cough and
the neuro mechanisms of cough hypersensitivity syndrome (Reynolds &
Slovarp). UM SLHOS is the only speech-language pathology (SLP)
graduate training program in Montana and one of only 8 in the mountain
west region. SLHOS faculty actively collaborate with organizations
such as UM’s Neural Injury Center, the Rural Institute for Inclusive
Communities, New Directions Wellness Center at the UM PT Clinic, the
Linguistics Program, the Neuroscience Program, the College of
Education, the Mountain West Consortium of Clinical and Translational
Research Infrastructure Network, and the Center for Population Health
Research. The DeWit RiteCare Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic
(RiteCare Clinic) is housed within SLHOS, providing outpatient speech,
language, hearing, and cognition services to adults and children with
4 specialty clinics. UM SLHOS has an outstanding track record of
research, with a strong commitment to graduate student mentoring and
development. Interested students are encouraged to contact mentors to
discuss specific project possibilities and requisite/preferred
background training. These RA awards are funded by the Office of
Research & Creative Scholarship and the College of Health for three
(3) years each. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until
filled. For more information about how to apply, please visit our
