Subject: Werner Abraham 1936-2024

With great sadness John Benjamins Publishing Co. received the news
that Werner Abraham passed away on 30 September.

For the development of John Benjamins’ list of publications Werner
Abraham was instrumental. In the late seventies, John W.M. Verhaar,
Pieter A. Verburg, Frits Staal, together with Werner Abraham pioneered
a journal in descriptive and functional linguistics, Studies in
Language (SL), the successor to Foundations of Language. As Managing
Editor Werner remained at the helm of SL for decades. Together with
John Verhaar, Werner started around this time also a companion book
series, the Studies in Language Companion Series (SLCS), informally
known as the green series. A little later a series with blue covers
with a more exclusive focus on formal syntax, and Werner Abraham as
sole Series Editor saw the light of day, Linguistik
Aktuell/Linguistics Today (LA). It is only a few years ago that Werner
handed over the editorship of both series to Elly van Gelderen who had
already been his co-editor for several years. To state that the
cooperation of Elly and Werner was prolific is almost an
understatement. Hundreds of monographs and collective volumes saw the
light of day under their editorship. In this way many young as well as
established linguists experienced Werner’s support, friendship and
his unabated love for language and linguistics. At John Benjamins we
are indebted to him for his advice and input, for his warmth and
generosity. During the last years we missed Werner, now with his
passing we miss him even more.
