Subject: MiMA!-Workshop on the Grammar of Manner Adverbials

Full Title: MiMA!-Workshop on the Grammar of Manner Adverbials

Date: 06-Mar-2025 - 07-Mar-2025
Location: Utrecht, Netherlands
Contact Person: Norbert Corver
Meeting Email: mima at uu.nl

Linguistic Field(s): Morphology; Pragmatics; Semantics; Syntax;
Typology

Call Deadline: 30-Nov-2024

Meeting Description:

The aim of this workshop is two-fold: (i) to celebrate the culmination
of the Mind your Manner Adverbials!-project at Utrecht University and
share its results, and (ii) to bring together (junior and senior)
researchers to discuss their work (in progress) on Manner Adverbials
(MAs).

Call for Papers:

We invite submissions for oral presentations (30 minutes + 10 minutes
for questions and discussion) on the grammar of Manner Adverbials,
including (but not limited to) their syntax, morphology, semantics,
and pragmatics, as well as the properties of MAs at the interfaces of
these fields of study. There are no restrictions as to the
investigated language. In particular, we encourage researchers who
study manner adverbials from a comparative perspective to submit.

Questions that could be addressed include the following:
What is the structural composition of manner-adverbial (MA)
expressions? To what extent do superficially different MA-expressions
(e.g. ‘with care’, ‘carefully’) have a uniform syntax? What kind of
grammatical behavior (e.g. word order) do MA-expressions display in
interaction with their structural environment? How are they integrated
into larger syntactic structures? What is the inner structure,
distribution and semantic-pragmatic behavior of pro-forms such as
‘so’, ‘thus’, ‘how’? To what extent are languages or varieties of a
single language (dialects) similar/different as regards the inner and
outer syntax of MA-expressions? To what extent are manner-adverbial
expressions similar to/different from other types of adverbial
expressions (e.g. locative, temporal, degree)?

Abstracts must not exceed 1 A4 page (with 1inch/2.54cm margins on all
sides, Times New Roman font, font size no smaller than 12pt), with an
additional page *exclusively* for references. Examples (glossed or
not) should be interspersed in the text rather than collected at the
end. Submissions must be anonymous and must not reveal the identities
of the authors in any way. At most two submissions per (co-)author are
permitted, only one submission may be single-authored.

Please send your abstract in PDF format to mima at uu.nl no later than
November 30, 2024, including WORKSHOP ABSTRACT in your subject line.

Key dates: Abstract submission deadline: November 30, 2024
Notification of decision: December 15, 2024
                        Workshop dates: March 6-7, 2025
