Description:

The Linguistics Department at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill invites applications for a full-time tenure-track
Assistant Professor position in Linguistics, to begin in the Fall of
2025. We are seeking applicants who specialize in Hispanic Linguistics
or Sociolinguistics, or a combination thereof (for example, a
sociolinguist specializing in the Spanish-speaking world or languages
in contact with Spanish).

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an outstanding
research and teaching agenda. Preference will be given to candidates
with: a record of published scholarship, evidence of excellence in
teaching and student mentoring experience, the potential to seek
external research funding, and a willingness to provide service at the
departmental and university level, and the discipline.

We especially welcome applications from candidates whose work aligns
with our departmental mission as outlined on our website, and
candidates whose research and teaching agendas complement those of the
current departmental faculty.

Minimum Requirements:

PhD in Linguistics or related field by date of hire (July 1, 2025).
Current PhD candidates (ABD) will be considered, but the PhD must be
obtained by July 1, 2026.
Evidence of a productive research agenda in Hispanic Linguistics or
Sociolinguistics.

Essential Functions:

The selected candidate will be expected to teach 2 courses per
semester, publish actively, and offer service to the Department and
University. Teaching will include lower-level and upper-level
undergraduate linguistics courses, the latter typically comprising a
mix of undergraduate and graduate students. Mentoring will likely
include students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, with
independent research, Honors Thesis research, MA Thesis research, and
potentially PhD Thesis research as part of the Dual Graduate Track in
Hispanic Linguistics (see below).

About the Linguistics Department:

We teach courses in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax,
semantics, formal theoretical approaches, computational linguistics,
language acquisition, linguistic anthropology, writing systems,
sociolinguistics, and more. We offer an Undergraduate Major and Minor,
an MA in Linguistics, a Graduate Certificate in Computational
Linguistics, and the opportunity for students to pursue a Ph.D. in
Hispanic Linguistics in conjunction with Romance Studies (Dual
Graduate Track in Hispanic Linguistics,
