On April 25-26, 2025, the Marco Institute for Medieval & Renaissance
Studies and the Language Resource Center at the University of
Tennessee, Knoxville are hosting a two-day symposium on "AI in the
Humanities & Social Sciences: Ethics, Practice, and Pedagogies." The
symposium is free (with breakfast and lunch provided on both days)
thanks to the generous sponsorhip of the AI Tennessee Initiative. The
event is also co-sponsored by the University of Tennessee College of
Arts & Sciences Consortium on Social & Cultural Inquiry (CoSCI), the
UT Department of English, and the UT Department of World Languages and
Cultures.
At the conference, regional and national scholars and practitioners
will explore the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on
humanities, the social sciences, applied linguistics, and world
languages and cultures. The event features interactive workshops,
hands-on demonstrations, and insightful panels, addressing ethical
considerations, innovative applications, and pedagogical strategies
for integrating AI into research and education. Highlights include
sessions on AI's role in linguistics, literature, and pre-modern
studies, as well as societal implications. Join us for dynamic
discussions, collaborative roundtables, and networking opportunities
to shape the future of AI in the humanities and social sciences.
We will feature a keynote lecture by Brent Seales (University of
Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering), on "Virtually Unwrapping the
Herculaneum Scrolls." In this fascinating keynote, Dr. Seales, a
pioneering expert in digital restoration and machine learning, will
unveil the remarkable story of virtual unwrapping—a revolutionary,
non-invasive method that allows scholars to read ancient texts trapped
inside damaged and inaccessible manuscripts. This cutting-edge
technology, once only an ambitious vision during the rise of digital
libraries and large-scale computing, has now become a reality through
big data, AI, and collaborative global research.
For full information on the symposium and to register, please visit
https://tiny.utk.edu/AI-HSS. A full schedule is available at
https://tiny.utk.edu/AI-HSS/schedule.
The first day of the symposium will feature the hands-on
demonstrations and a workshop by our partners at WondaVR on
“Maximizing the Impact of Immersive Conversational Simulations with
AI-generated Feedback.” This workshop is free, but a SEPARATE
REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED because of limited space! To register for it,
