Focus: Trans-Himilayan Historical Linguistics
Description:
The Summer School for Ancient Trans-Himalayan Languages (SSATH),
hosted by the Centre for Asian Studies at Trinity College Dublin, is a
two-week long summer school that features courses in ancient languages
and historical linguistics within the scope of the Trans-Himalayan
(Sino-Tibetan) family, and weekend workshops on two more languages.
This year, the courses will include: Old Tibetan, Reconstructing
Proto-(Western)-Kho-Bwa, Tangut, Yi Script, and Methods in Gyalrongic
and Tangut Historical Linguistics. These courses will run for ten days
over the course of two weeks. On both Saturdays, there will be
additional supplementary workshops on Old Meitei and Old Burmese. As a
general rule, courses will be open to everyone of all education
levels, though, for some courses, certain background knowledge is

learn more. This summer school will be of interest to those in the
fields of Historical Linguistics, Descriptive Linguistics, Linguistic
Anthropology, Palaeography, Religious Studies, Buddhist Studies,
(Asian) History, and Ancient Literature. The instructors will include
scholars both from Trinity College Dublin and from other institutions
around the world. As such, the school will serve as a great
opportunity to meet and connect with specialists in the fields
mentioned above.
Tuition: 0/150/300/400 EUR
Tuition Explanation: Tuition Fee for onsite students
Undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate students, TCD faculty, and those
outside of academia: No tuition fee
Part-time lecturers or research fellows: 150 Euro
Full-time lecturers or professors: 300 Euro
Tuition Fee for online students
400 Euro all languages (+ mini workshops). Discounts of 100 Euro or
250 Euro are available upon request. Check the application form for
more details.
Financial Aid Applications accepted until 30-Apr-2026
