We are pleased to announce the publication of the first edition of
BibLexSpan – Bibliografía de estudios sobre unidades léxicas del
español: https://biblexspan.fr/
BibLexSpan is an open access bibliographic database that brings
together references to studies devoted to the lexical units of the
Spanish language. “Lexical unit” is understood as any element of
Spanish, including morphemes, words, and multiword expressions
(locutions, constructions, phraseological units, sayings, and
proverbs). In this broad sense, the term encompasses both lexical
units in the strict sense and grammatical units.
The BibLexSpan database was conceived and developed by Ana Stulic
(Université Bordeaux Montaigne, UR 3656 AMERIBER-GRIAL) and Soufiane
Rouissi (Université Bordeaux Montaigne, UR 4426 MICA), in
collaboration with Patrick Dendale (University of Antwerp, GaP),
author of the Lexicales – Bibliographie lexico-grammaticale database
dedicated to French
(https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/projects/lexicales/), which directly
inspired the creation of BibLexSpan.
Why BibLexSpan?
The creation of a database of this kind responds to the difficulty of
identifying, within general bibliographic databases, studies devoted
to specific lexical units. Two main factors explain this difficulty:
Search engines do not distinguish between words in use and mentioned
words;
The lexical units under study rarely appear among the keywords, since
it is common for linguistic studies to be described using
metalinguistic terminology.
What can you find in BibLexSpan?
The inaugural 2025 edition of BibLexSpan offers 1,142 bibliographic
references corresponding to 1,678 distinct lexical units.
The criteria for selecting and presenting the references, as well as
the search functionalities, were developed by an international
scientific committee of specialists in Spanish linguistics,
established within the framework of the project Prolegrames: Procesos
de lexicalización y gramaticalización en la historia del español:
cambio, variación y pervivencia en la historia discursiva del español
(ref. PID2020-112605GB-I00, PI Francisco Javier Herrero Ruiz de
Loizaga, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 2021–2025).
The selected studies may be written in any language, provided they
present an in-depth analysis of at least one lexical unit of Spanish.
The study must be sufficiently specific and detailed to be relevant to
that unit. For this reason, studies dealing with general categories
(e.g., perception verbs, evidential, etc.) are not included unless
they offer a detailed examination of at least one concrete lexical
unit.
Lexical units from all periods in the history of Spanish and from all
varieties of Spanish are included. Contrastive studies dealing with
specific lexical units are also incorporated. Although most references
come from linguistic research, BibLexSpan also includes studies from
other disciplines (literature, sociology, economics, law, etc.),
provided they focus on a specific lexical unit.
How to search for references in BibLexSpan?
In structuring the data, we opted to prioritize human input, the
long-term stability of information, and its reusability by human
users.
The main contribution of BibLexSpan lies in the association of
keywords—i.e., the concrete lexical units studied—with each reference.
This allows users to search directly for a morpheme (e.g., contra- or
-mente), a word (e.g., de, por, tú, estar, parecer, Patagonia, etc.),
or a multiword sequence (e.g., aunque sea, ahora sí que, ni por esas
ni por esotras).
The complete alphabetical index of all recorded lexical units
(available on the "Unidades léxicas" page) allows users to freely
explore the bibliography by clicking on a keyword.
It is also possible to search for any sequence of characters within
the “text” of the bibliographic references. This is useful, for
example, for viewing all publications by a given author or all titles
containing a metalinguistic term. References may also be filtered by
publication type (journal article, book chapter, monograph, thesis).
Finally, all articles from the same journal are grouped into
“collections,” which can likewise be freely explored (on the
"Colecciones" page).
Unlike automated library catalogues, which break down bibliographic
information into separate fields (author, title, year, etc.), we have
chosen to present references in a format suited to human reading. Each
reference appears as formatted text, following the bibliographic
standard adopted by the scientific committee (explained and
illustrated in the "Estilo bibliográfico" section). Search results are
displayed as an alphabetically ordered bibliographic list that can be
easily copied.
Call for contributions – BibLexSpan 2026 Edition
The BibLexSpan project is supported by the University of Bordeaux
Montaigne and its development plan includes an annual update of the
data. With the publication of the 2025 edition, we are now opening the
call for contributions for the 2026 edition:
