Terminology at the Intersection of Translation, Interpreting, and LSP
Terminology acquisition is a key aspect of the work of translators and
interpreters, as well as a fundamental component of learning in
Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP). The ability to accurately
identify, understand, and apply domain-specific terms ensures clear
communication and enhances professional credibility.
Numerous tools are now available to streamline and enhance terminology
acquisition, offering translators, interpreters, and LSP learners
powerful resources to support their work. Juremy.com is an advanced
online concordance search tool that allows users to instantly find
legal and technical terminology across all 24 EU languages, providing
fast and reliable access to official EU documents. BabelNet serves as
a groundbreaking multilingual resource, combining an encyclopaedic
dictionary with a semantic network, offering comprehensive term
coverage and connecting concepts and named entities through
approximately 23 million semantic relations. InterpretBank is a
specialised tool designed for interpreters, enabling efficient
terminology management with features like personalised glossaries and
context-based term retrieval. SketchEngine, a leading tool for corpus
analysis, helps users explore how terms are used in real-world
contexts by analysing language patterns and frequency in large text
corpora.
These are just some of the tools available to support terminology
acquisition, illustrating how technology can empower professionals to
manage and apply terminology effectively. By leveraging these
resources, translators, interpreters, and LSP learners can ensure
precision, clarity, and accuracy in their work across a range of
specialised contexts.
The issue of Scripta Manent will explore the acquisition and role of
terminology in translation and interpreting, examining how these
processes can be applied to Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP) and,
conversely, how LSP can inform and enhance terminology management in
these fields.
We invite original contributions that investigate these topics through
theoretical frameworks, empirical research, or practical applications.
Submissions may address, but are not limited to:
1. Terminology extraction, management, and standardization for
LSP domains
2. Teaching interpreting and translation within an LSP context
3. Corpus-based studies for terminology in LSP
4. Role of translation and interpreting technologies in LSP
5. Domain-specific multilingual communication challenges
6. Collaboration between translators, interpreters, and subject
matter experts
7. Terminology training and development for interpreters and
translators
8. Impact of AI on terminology acquisition, standardization, and
application in professional settings
9. Development and use of terminology and glossary tools for
translation, interpreting, and LSP
Languages for Submission:
