Description:

The ANR-DFG Project IMMAGES (“Hosting a clause: Implications for the
matrix and its guests” https://immages.hypotheses.org/, 2023-2027)
invites applications for a 12-month post-doc position in semantics
and/or syntax, starting in late Summer or early Fall 2025.
The goal of the project is to contribute to our understanding of
clausal complementation by focusing on the way clausal complements
(e.g., “(I think) that it is raining”) are inserted in the matrix
clause. This matter has been the subject of much research in the past
50 years because, compared to an NP object, the relationship of the
clause to the matrix predicate notoriously tends to be deviant both
semantically and syntactically. A number of hypotheses try to account
for these facts (ranging from giving up with the very concept of
complementation to salvaging it semantically and/or syntactically or
positing a pivot between the matrix predicate and the clause, whatever
its nature). The project aims to put to the test the various ideas,
building on the history of languages, dialectological variation,
linguistic comparison, philosophical insights, starting with Basque,
French, German (and dialects of German), Greek, Hungarian thereby
concentrating on the various types of complementizers and their
possible semantic contribution to the different types of embedded
clauses (e.g., relative clauses vs. complement clauses). In order to
find out correlations between these and further properties like
factivity, a database will be built as part of the project.
Tasks
- The postdoctoral researcher will be in charge of coordinating the
crosslinguistic database between the various researchers, ensuring
that the data are collected and tagged in the same and compatible
format and that they abide by the FAIR principles.
- In addition to that, s/he will conduct her/his own research in the
frame of one or several of the work packages of the project, as
described on the website.
The project is distributed over different sites in France and Germany
and there will be intensive collaboration with the other members and
partners of the project (https://immages.hypotheses.org/members). This
position will be hosted at the Université de Tours and is attached to
Pr. Richard Faure and the Lab. CeTHiS
(https://cethis.hypotheses.org/richard-faure). Possible local
collaborations can be developed with the morpho-phono and the
pragmatics teams (https://lll.cnrs.fr/) or the psycholinguistics team
(typical and atypical acquisition of phonology and syntax,
https://ibrain.univ-tours.fr/english-version/research-topics/autism).
Tours is in the south of Paris (one hour by train). It is a beautiful
student city with a low cost of living.
Knowledge of French is not required.
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed.
Payment: 2100€/months (net salary)
Support will be provided for travel expenses as well as a computer
