Going beyond L2 speech: Multilingual production and perception
PLM 2025 thematic session

In this thematic session we would like to discuss how going beyond L2
acquisition of speech to L3/Ln enriches or changes our perspective on
the development of non-native language production and perception and
the methodologies used to examine them. Previous research has pointed
to enhanced perceptual sensitivity and increased (meta)phonological
awareness. CLI becomes more complex in terms of type and
directionality (cf. Cabrelli Amaro & Wrembel 2016, Kartushina and
Martin 2019), whereas cross-linguistic similarity gains new dimensions
(cf. Flege & Bohn 2021, Cebrian 2022, Gut, Kopečková & Nelson 2023).
These new aspects can broaden research horizons, but they also bring
about novel methodological and theoretical challenges which are worth
discussing (see Gut & Wrembel 2024). We welcome studies on
multilingual production or perception, including, but not limited to,
segmental and/or suprasegmental analyses, the perception and
production modality link, comparisons of L2 vs. L3 speech acquisition
as well as the role of conditioning factors.
