Special Issue
"Granular Meanings: The Role of Small Linguistic Units in Cognitive
and Applied Corpus Linguistics"
This special issue aims to deepen the understanding of small
linguistic units—such as morphemes, affixes, meaning facets of lemmas,
and subtle semantic distinctions—that lie at the core of word meanings
and their cognitive underpinnings.
Guest editor:
Prof. Siaw-Fong Chung, Department of English, National Chengchi
University, Taiwan
Special issue information:
This special issue aims to deepen the understanding of small
linguistic units—such as morphemes, affixes, meaning facets of lemmas,
and subtle semantic distinctions—that lie at the core of word meanings
and their cognitive underpinnings. While artificial intelligence has
vastly improved corpus collection techniques, nuanced insights into
these fine-grained linguistic elements remain essential to exploring
complex areas such as historical linguistics, translation studies, and
cross-linguistic comparison. By investigating the interrelatedness of
small units of meaning, this issue seeks to uncover patterns that
reconstruct semantic networks and reveal metaphorical connections
across languages and contexts. This approach aligns with the mission
of ACORP, which is dedicated to advancing applied corpus methodologies
that directly inform real-world language use and enhance communication
practices.
Contributions to this issue may include studies employing innovative
corpus-based methods to analyze morphemes, polysemy, semantic
networks, or metaphorical structures, as well as theoretical
discussions that examine the implications of such findings for applied
linguistics. We invite researchers from diverse fields who work on the
interface between corpus linguistics and cognitive mechanisms to share
their insights, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and, more
importantly for ACORP, practical applications in understanding
language structure, evolution, and usage.
Proposed Timeline
Abstract Submission Deadline: Feb 28, 2025
Full Manuscript Submission: July 31, 2025
Final Decision: October 31, 2025
Planned Publication Date: December 2025
We invite researchers to submit abstracts focused on the applied
analysis of small units of meaning in corpora. Contributions should
demonstrate how corpus-based methods reveal important patterns in
small linguistic units and discuss the applications of these findings
in real-world contexts.
Manuscript submission information:
Abstracts should not exceed one A4 page and should outline research
questions, methodology, and applied relevance.
Abstracts are due by Feb 28, 2025.
