The roots of the Italian language run deep in Egypt. As early as the
first half of the 18th century, specifically in 1732, Italian began to
be taught at the Franciscan friars' headquarters in the Muski district
in central Cairo, considered the first foreign school in Egypt.
Due to various cultural, political, and social factors, the study of
the Italian language in Egypt did not always develop linearly.
At one point, the Italian language gained a prestigious status among
foreign languages in Egypt, as it was widely used in consulates,
diplomatic representations, and foreign courts. An important turning
point occurred with the rise of Muhammad Ali to power in Egypt at the
beginning of the 19th century. In his desire to modernize Egypt,
Muhammad Ali ordered the founding of the School of Al-Alsun
(Languages) in 1835, with Italian being one of the primary languages
taught. Study at the School was interrupted several times, but since
1956, the year of its reopening, the Department of Italian Studies at
the current Faculty of Al-Alsun continues to play a central role in
the dissemination and teaching of the Italian language and
translation.
The new generations have received the torch from distinguished
professors and graduates who have tenaciously contributed to the
spread of Italian studies and translation to maintain our department’s
leading role among similar institutions in Egypt and the Arab world.
Conference Objectives:
Within the afore mentioned framework, the International Conference
"Italian Studies and Challenges of the Third Millennium" aims to
thoroughly investigate the latest developments in the main research
areas related to Italian studies (e. g. Italian literature, Italian
linguistics, comparative studies of languages, cultures, and
literatures, translation, teaching of Italian language and new
technologies) by analyzing the challenges that have arisen in
scientific research in these disciplines. The main objective will,
therefore, be to offer a space for analysis, discussion, and study –
from an intertextual, intermedial, and interdisciplinary perspective –
in which we can explore new research methods in Italian studies
through a range of different approaches, voices, and perspectives to
keep up with the most recent developments and project ourselves into
the future.

Languages of Presentation and Conference Proceedings:
The official language of the conference is Italian; presentations in
Arabic and English will also be accepted. Manuscripts accepted for
publication in the volume of proceedings must be in Italian, Arabic,
or English.
How to Participate in the Conference:
The proposed contribution must not have been previously published or
be under publication.

Send a single file to congr.italianistica at alsun.asu.edu.eg, indicating
"Abstract2025" as the email subject. The submitted file must include
the following:
 - Name of the author(s)
 - Affiliation
 - Title of the contribution in Italian (or Arabic) and English
 - Abstract in Italian (or Arabic) and English (max 500 words for each
language, excluding bibliography), highlighting: the chosen theme,
objectives, methodology (and expected results)
 - Essential bibliography
 - Keywords (3-5 words)
The maximum time for oral presentation is 15 minutes. The complete
manuscript should not exceed 7000 words (including bibliography).
Registration Fee:
1200 EGP for Egyptian participants.
150 USD for participants from abroad.
50 USD for postgraduate students from abroad.
Payment is to be made to the Rifaa Unit of the Faculty of Al-Alsun
(Languages), Ain Shams University by October 3, 2025 (details on
registration and payment will be provided later to the participants).
Conference Proceedings
Contributions proposed for participation in the conference will be
subject to evaluation by the scientific committee (a triple blind
peer-review). Contributions accepted for publication will be included
in the conference proceedings volume. Further details will be provided
later to the authors.

The conference will be held in a hybrid mode (in-person and online).
