Special Issue of Migration and Language Education
Theme: The Cultural and Educational Challenges of Migration and
Language Acquisition
Migration and Language Education is an innovative open access journal
devoted to the research intersecting two different dimensions, namely
migration and language education. When a person migrates, it is
particularly difficult to adapt to a host country unless s/he already
has acquired its language(s). At the same time, the migrants’
linguistic assets have intrinsic relationships with the identities and
communication cultures of the migrants and their families. Thus,
migration is naturally associated with various aspects of language
education. This journal invites new and creative manuscripts that can
discuss languages, language acquisition, identity problems, language
policy, and social integration that are triggered by migration.
Across the globe, migration has become a defining feature of our era.
Driven by war, racial and ethnic conflicts, political instability, and
economic necessity, millions of individuals and families are moving
across borders in search of safety, stability, and opportunity. In
many countries, migration is no longer an exception but an everyday
reality—transforming societies, institutions, and classrooms.
In this context, the language policies of host countries play a
critical role in shaping migrants' integration experiences and
educational outcomes. For migrant children and youth in particular,
acquiring the language(s) of the host country is both a vital
educational challenge and a culturally transformative process.
This special issue of Migration and Language Education, published by
Castledown Publishers, seeks to explore the cultural and educational
challenges of migration and language acquisition from a global
perspective. We invite contributions that examine how
migrants—especially children and youth—experience and navigate
linguistic, cultural, and educational transitions in varied
sociopolitical and geographic contexts.
However, this theme is not intended to be limiting. We welcome a broad
range of submissions that investigate the complex and evolving
relationships between migration and language education, including but
not limited to:
-National and local language policies affecting migrants
-Language ideologies and classroom practices in multicultural settings
-Identity, belonging, and multilingual development among migrant
learners
-The role of heritage languages in migrant communities
-Comparative or country-specific case studies
-Teacher training and pedagogical innovation in linguistically diverse
classrooms
-Linguistic integration programs and their outcomes
-Experiences of asylum seekers, refugees, or stateless children in
educational systems
-Through this special issue, we aim to foster a deeper understanding
of how language education intersects with the lived experiences of
migrants in different parts of the world. We encourage
interdisciplinary and critical approaches that challenge monolingual
norms and highlight the agency and voices of migrant learners and
educators.
