Description:
The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois,
Urbana-Champaign invites applications for an Instructor/Visiting
Assistant Professor position in Semantics/Pragmatics. The appointment
will be a full-time, nine-month position. Renewal of position is
possible and contingent on availability of funding, strong
enrollments, and strong performance reviews. The target start date of
appointment is August 16, 2025.
Position overview:
Successful candidates are expected to teach effectively at both the
undergraduate and graduate levels, offering courses in semantic
theory, pragmatics, and general linguistics; and to maintain an active
an independent research agenda in semantics/pragmatics. The budgeted
salary for this position is $68,000, for a 9-month service basis.
Required Qualifications:
PhD in hand or ABD status in Linguistics or a related field, with
specialization in semantics/pragmatics by start of appointment.
Candidates who are ABD at the time of appointment may be appointed at
the rank of Instructor. Research effectiveness or potential for
research effectiveness in the field of semantics/pragmatics. A
commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship,
including a commitment to teaching semantic theory. Teaching
experience and evidence of teaching excellence, including but not
limited to: student evaluations, teaching observations and teaching
portfolios
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in hand by the time of appointment
- Evidence of a strong research program and trajectory, including,
but not limited to:
- publications in highly prestigious peer-reviewed journals
- well-placed conference presentations
- Expertise in areas that complement the existing strengths of the
unit, such as experimental or computational approaches to semantics,
psycholinguistics, language acquisition, and the syntax-semantics
interface
