About this volume: The Handbook of Place-Based Pedagogies in Language
and Culture Studies is envisioned as a scholarly volume which offers a
comprehensive overview of the theories, methodologies, and
applications of place-oriented frameworks in language and culture
studies. It examines how educators and researchers incorporate spatial
constructs, local environments, and community knowledge into
pedagogical and scholarly practices across diverse disciplinary
contexts. Emphasizing the significance of geographical, cultural,
ethnographic, geopolitical, historical, and linguistic features of
place, the handbook aims to serve as a valuable resource for those
interested in incorporating spatial perspectives into the study and
teaching of cultures, literatures, and languages.
Key points about this handbook:
It presents a range of theoretical and empirical perspectives on
place-based education, addressing the social, cultural, ideological,
and political dimensions of physical and virtual “place” and “space.”
It invites both conceptual and practice-oriented chapters that explore
the intersection of place-based pedagogies with fields such as
geography, anthropology, ethnography, literary and cultural studies,
digital humanities, community and indigenous studies, applied
linguistics, and first/second language acquisition.
In addition to theoretical insights, the volume will include chapters
showcasing practical implementations of place-based teaching and
research across varied cultural and institutional settings, offering
concrete examples of how educators and scholars apply spatial
frameworks in their work.
