Description:

The Institute of Linguistics at the Department of Modern Languages of
Goethe University Frankfurt am Main offers a position in cotutelle
with the Department of Translation and Language Sciences at
Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, in the project “Co-Speech
Gestures and Prosody as Multimodal Markers of Information Structure”
as a
Doctoral Researcher
(E 13 TV-GU, 65% part-time)
starting earliest possible date funded for three years by the German
Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG). The salary
grade is based on the job characteristics of the collective agreement
applicable to Goethe University (TV-G-U).
We offer a three-year doctoral co-tutelle position to work within a
collaborative team in the research project “Co-Speech Gestures and
Prosody as Multimodal Markers of Information Structure”, co-PIed by
Frank Kügler (Goethe University Frankfurt) and Pilar Prieto (ICREA,
Universitat Pompeu Fabra). The project is part of the DFG Priority
Progamme 2392 “Visual Communication” (https://vicom.info).
The project’s main objective is to assess how a crucial part of
semantics and pragmatics, namely the way that relevant information is
packaged in discourse, is encoded multimodally in Catalan and German.
The research tasks include preparing a PhD thesis on prosody-gesture
coordination processes in Catalan conversation and cognitive aspects
involved. This comprises co-designing production and perception
experiments with human adults, recruiting participants and running
experiments, preparing and analyzing data, drafting and submitting
manuscripts.
The position involves conducting research at Goethe University of
Frankfurt and at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, at least one year in each
location. The PhD student is expected to actively participate in the
project and the two department’s research activities and
administrative tasks. The position comes with no teaching obligation.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in linguistics and
linguistic experimentation, is highly motivated and interested in the
assessment of prosodic and gestural markers in language. Knowledge of
Catalan will be required to run the experiments. To qualify for a
doctoral position in this project the candidate should hold a master’s
degree in Linguistics, Philology, Psychology, or a related field.
Prior research experience in these domains is a plus. We expect a very
good command of written and spoken English (C2), and proficiency in
Catalan. Skills in experimental design and statistics are expected, or
a willingness to obtain them. Programming skills, good cooperation and
communication skills, good writing skills, and skills in project
management are also required.
The application in English should consist of one pdf file containing:
 - cover letter describing your research interests and motivation for
carrying out a PhD in this area (maximum one page)
 - curriculum vitae
 - English certificate of your BA and MA degree (or equivalent) with a
transcript of records
 - copy of your MA thesis
 - a maximum two-page description of a potential PhD project within
the scope of the abovementioned proposal which states a potential
research question and work plan related to the project. The actual
dissertation project of the successful candidate will be worked out in
collaboration with the supervisor.
 - contact details of two referees
 - other documents which the applicant would like to include
All required documents should be emailed as one single pdf file to
Frank Kügler (Kuegler at em.uni-frankfurt.de) and Pilar Prieto
(pilar.prieto at upf.edu) until 04 December 2025. For more information,
please contact Frank Kügler and Pilar Prieto.

Application Deadline: 04-Dec-2025
