Description:

The Linguistics Program at the University of South Carolina invites
students to apply for Fall 2026 admission to our PhD program. We offer
a competitive funding package including full tuition, stipend, and
health insurance. Students with a BA or MA in Linguistics may be
directly admitted to the PhD program; other students may apply to the
MA or MA/PhD tracks .
The program seeks to ground students in theory and method while
encouraging interdisciplinary approaches to the study of language. We
welcome students considering specializations in:
- Historical linguistics
- Phonetics, phonology
- Psycholinguistics
- Second language acquisition
- Sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology
- Syntax, semantics, pragmatics

In addition to their competitive tuition and stipend packages,
students have access to travel and research funding opportunities
annually through the Linguistics Program, the Office for the Vice
President for Research, and the Graduate School. Graduate student life
is enriched by specialized reading groups and colloquia, the annual
student research symposium, an engaging slate of professional
development workshops, and the activities of the Graduate Student
Linguistics Club (GSLING).
Prospective students in the region are invited to learn more about the
innovative research underway in our program by joining us on campus
for the fall Student Research Symposium (SRS) on Saturday, November
15, 2025.
All prospective graduate students are invited to a virtual open house
and information session via Zoom on Friday, December 5, 2025 from
10-11am.
