Subject: CUNY-Corpus of New York City English and Launch Party

CUNY Profs. Christina Tortora, Michael Newman, Bill Haddican, Cecelia
Cutler, and U. of Pennsylvania Prof. Beatrice Santorini are pleased to
announce the release of the CUNY Corpus of New York City English. The
Corpus of New York City English (CUNY-CoNYCE) is an innovative
audio-aligned and parsed corpus of New Yorkers’ speech which aims to
further the study of New York City English (namely, the varieties of
English particular to New York City and the surrounding region).
The project combines recent advances in speech corpus development
tools with the special talents and backgrounds of undergraduates at
the City University of New York (CUNY). The CUNY-CoNYCE is based on
interviews with New Yorkers across the five boroughs and Long Island,
conducted by CUNY undergraduates from Queens College, Lehman College
(The Bronx), and the College of Staten Island.
The launch event will take place at the CUNY Graduate Center this
coming Friday, October 17, 2025 from 12-2pm in room 9206 and on Zoom.
