Call for abstracts for book chapter contributions
Title: Language Lives: Creating Spaces for Plurilingualism in the
University Curriculum
Editors: Amanda Brown, Gail Bulman, M. Emma Ticio Quesada
Publisher: The volume is currently under consideration with
Multilingual Matters.
With the decline of world language study (MLA, 2021) and consequent
decline in resources and opportunities for such study, this volume
will showcase how educators and students can co-create dynamic,
inclusive, and accessible spaces for developing and maintaining
multiple languages in the university curriculum. The collection seeks
contributions that empirically (defined broadly) investigate the ways
in which educators and their students have envisioned and actively
produced new types of plurilingual contact zones, with implications
for how such models can be generalized to other contexts. The volume
will focus on university settings in the United States, targeting the
following areas:
- Plurilingualism and performance – submissions that explore how the
creation of artistic performances by students across languages may
break down cultural and linguistic barriers and may help address
conflicts and tensions in university settings.
- Plurilingualism and community engagement - submissions that examine
the development of relationships between students and local
communities through the language lives and identities present in each.
- Plurilingualism across the university curriculum – submissions that
investigate how languages other than English as the mainstream medium
of instruction in US higher education can be integrated broadly across
content areas other than language classes.
