Subject: Making Waves, new online research group on the acquisition of prosody and gesture
We, Mariia Pronina (University of the Balearic Islands) and Rebecca
Woods (Newcastle University), are starting a new online research
group on the acquisition of prosody and gesture called Making Waves.
The group is intended to be an interactive, supportive and informative
group that meets monthly to discuss, explore and problem-solve issues
on the acquisition of prosody and gesture, rather than a platform for
individuals to present research at length. In this way, we hope to
create an international network of gesture and prosody acquisition
researchers that will boost everyone's research programmes and
prospects.
For more information, you can also visit our nascent website here:
https://sites.google.com/view/making-waves-group/.
Below we are sharing with you information about the first session that
will take place on October 22.
----------------
Dear colleagues,
Making Waves is ready to launch!
Next Wednesday, October 22, we will meet for the first time to delve
into the world of prosody and gesture together!
We, Mariia and Rebecca, will kick off the first session by introducing
ourselves and sharing a bit about this new online research group.
We’ll also go over the results of the questionnaire we asked you to
fill out, which offer some interesting insights into what’s currently
on the minds of the gesture and prosody community.
We will then focus on a methodological topic of this month and discuss
ecological validity of elicited prosodic data in children. As you
know, the meetings are intended to be discursive and interactive, so
our presentation will be very brief (10-15 min) and the main part of
the session will be dedicated to a discussion of open questions. While
we’ll start with child data, we’re eager to hear from everyone working
on different populations—whether your research focuses on adults, L2
learners, or other groups, your experiences and perspectives will be
valuable for the group.
To wrap up:
Time: 22nd of October 2025, 15:05 – 16:00 (CET)
Topic: Ecological validity of elicited prosodic productions in
children
Speakers: Mariia Pronina & Rebecca Woods
Hosts: Mariia Pronina & Rebecca Woods

Everyone is warmly invited to join us!
See you next week,
Mariia and Rebecca
