Description:
The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese at Penn State
University is looking for highly motivated candidates for admission to
the PhD program
(https://sip.la.psu.edu/graduate-spanish/graduate-program-in-inguistics-and-language-science/).
Professors Matthew Carlson, Manuel Pulido, Karen Miller, Rena Torres
Cacoullos, and Paola (Giuli) Dussias are accepting graduate student
applications for admission in Fall 2026. We employ a number of
techniques including electrophysiology (EEG), corpus studies, eye
tracking and other behavioral methods to examine questions related to
the linguistic and psycholinguistic aspects of bilingualism.
Departmental areas of expertise include variation and change (Torres
Cacoullos), child language acquisition and variation (Miller),
phonology (Carlson), sentence processing (Dussias) and second language
acquisition (Pulido).
In addition to our internationally recognized faculty and rich
training opportunities across subdisciplines and research
methodologies, students in our program can also obtain a Dual Title
Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics and Language Science
(https://sip.la.psu.edu/graduate-spanish/graduate-program-in-inguistics-and-language-science/dual-title-doctoral-degree-in-spanish-and-language-science/).
The Dual Title enriches students' training in other areas of Language
Science through coursework, research rotations, colloquia, and
collaboration with colleagues across Penn State's Center for Language
Science (https://cls.la.psu.edu/): Communication Sciences and
Disorders, German and Slavic Languages, Linguistics, and Psychology.
Past students have worked with faculty in affiliated departments
including Carol Miller (Communication Sciences and Disorders), who
studies pathways of language development from childhood into
adulthood; Mike Putnam (German), who works on heritage varieties and
a range of approaches to morphology; James Stratton (German), who
works on lexical variation and historical and corpus linguistics,
Janet Van Hell (Psychology), who explores neural and cognitive
mechanisms of bilingual language processing and code-switching; and
Navin Viswanathan (Communication Sciences and Disorders), whose
research focuses on understanding speech perception and production.
Our students are fully funded for 5 years through teaching and
research assistantships.
Applications Deadline: January 3, 2026
