The 10th edition of the international conference Les français d’ici
(https://lesfrancaisdici2026.uvic.ca/), co-organized by Catherine
Léger and Pierre-Don Giancarli, was held at the University of Victoria
from June 15 to June 17 2026. Several knowledge mobilization
activities stemming from the conference and aimed at ensuring its
long-term sustainability were organized:
- An article in Le Devoir, one of French Canada’s leading newspapers,
highlights the key issues explored during the conference while also
demystifying the work of linguists. Written by Mireille Elchacar, the
piece is a welcome recognition of the conference’s impact and
underscores the relevance and timeliness of discussions on the
varieties of French spoken across North America:

- The CEFAN (Chaire pour le développement de la recherche sur la
culture d’expression française en Amérique du Nord) at Université
Laval, in collaboration with the conference co-organizers, Catherine
Léger and Pierre-Don Giancarli, produced a series of short videos on
the varieties of French spoken in North America. Presented in a
concise and accessible format, these videos showcase the work of
leading specialists in the field. They are available on CEFAN’s
YouTube channel:
https://www.youtube.com/@cefan-flsh-universitelaval580
- Radio Victoria produced a series of interviews highlighting the work
of researchers specializing in the varieties of French spoken in North
America. These engaging interviews are available at the following
link:

- The video recordings of the workshops and plenary sessions are
available on the conference’s YouTube channel:
https://www.youtube.com/@Lesfran%C3%A7aisdici2026
They are also available on the conference website under the "Program"
section (at the very bottom of the page) and are embedded on the
individual pages for each plenary session and workshop:

Here is a list of the recordings:
1) Catherine Léger and Pierre-Don Giancarli, University of Victoria,
British Columbia, Canada (Welcome address)
2) France Martineau, University of Ottawa, Canada (Plenary lecture): «
Niez, niez, il en restera toujours quelque chose » : la négation dans
la correspondance familiale de l’élite québécoise au XIXe siècle
3) Marie-Hélène Côté, University of Lausanne, Switzerland (Plenary
lecture): Le destin des traits laurentiens
4) Oliver Mayeux, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom (Workshop):
Communauté, corpus, collecte de données linguistiques
5) Oliver Mayeux, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom (Plenary
lecture): L’accord grammatical en créole louisianais : Repenser la
variation à partir d’enregistrements nouvellement identifiés
6) Myriam Bergeron-Maguire, Sorbonne Nouvelle University, France
(Plenary lecture): Les lettres françaises des « Prize Papers » : un
précieux gisement pour l’histoire du français en Amérique
7) Basile Roussel and Nathalie Dion, University of Moncton and

8) Basile Roussel, University of Moncton, Canada (Plenary lecture):

These are invaluable opportunities to discover aspects of the
varieties of French spoken in North America that remain little known
or largely undocumented, and to deepen our understanding of this
intangible cultural heritage.
Preparations for the edited volume, which will be published in Les
voies du français series by the Presses de l’Université Laval, will
begin in the fall.
