The Institute is the largest and longest-running summer school for
linguistics in the world, and has been held since 1928. For its
centennial edition, the Institute will return to the University of
Oregon, with a new theme, The Dynamics of Language. The 2027 edition
will host ~70-80 different courses arranged over two 2-week terms,
ranging from introductions to core areas of linguistics to specialized
seminars on issues of current interest to cutting-edge methodologies.
These will be supplemented with tutorials and professional development
events on Wednesdays and co-located conferences on weekends. To get an
idea of what it looks like, you can peruse last year's website at
https://center.uoregon.edu/LSA/2025/. Eugene is a city of ~170,000
people, home to the University of Oregon, located at the southern end
of the beautiful Willamette Valley. Within a 90-minute drive, you will
find snow-capped mountains, a gorgeous coastline, wild hot springs,
deserted ocean beaches, top-notch wineries, and more.
