Call Deadline: 01-Apr-2026

Call for Papers: Special Issue on Generative AI in Informal English
Language Learning
Journal: Technology-Assisted Language Education (TALE)
Editor in Chief: Professor Saman Ebadi, Razi University
Guest Editor: Professor Pia Sundqvist, University of Oslo
Focus and Scope:
The rapid emergence of Generative AI (GenAI) has created an
unprecedented landscape for autonomous and informal English language
learning outside of traditional classrooms. This special issue seeks
to explore and theorize how GenAI tools such as LLMs, chatbots, and
AI-integrated gaming are utilized by learners in unstructured
settings. We invite research that examines how these technologies
influence L2 acquisition outside educational institutions. We are
specifically interested in research that examines how GenAI tools
impact learners’ L2 English vocabulary knowledge and oral proficiency,
but also autonomy and, thus, the very nature of Extramural English
(EE) engagement.
Suggested Topics:
We encourage empirical and theoretical submissions on topics
including, but not limited to:
 - AI & Extramural English (EE): Analyzing the use of GenAI for
English exposure, consumption, and production outside of formal
learning settings.
 - Gaming & AI Integration: The role of AI-enhanced gaming, virtual
worlds, and NPCs (Non-Player Characters) in L2 socialization and
fluency development.
 - L2 Oral Proficiency: Using GenAI tools for unstructured, real-time
conversation practice, pronunciation feedback, and naturalistic
dialogue.
 - L2 Vocabulary Acquisition: The impact of GenAI-generated context,
personalized lexical input, and spontaneous meaning negotiation on
retention.
 - Learner Autonomy: How GenAI empowers self-directed language
learning and motivates engagement with English language content.
Submission Guidelines:
Submissions must be original. The journal is Open Access with no
publication fees.
How to Submit:
Please submit an abstract of approximately 300 words (excluding
references) via email to the Guest Editor:
pia.sundqvist at ils.uio.no
Important Dates:
Abstract Submission Deadline April 1, 2026
Notification of Acceptance April 30, 2026
Full Manuscript Deadline June 30, 2026
