Special Issue on
AI and English Language Teaching
English Language Teaching (ELT) continues to evolve rapidly in
response to shifting communicative needs, global interactions and
emerging pedagogical priorities. In recent years, the field has
witnessed a strong movement towards learner-centred instruction,
multilingual and multicultural classroom practices, data-informed
pedagogy and innovative approaches to developing language skills.
Technology remains at the heart of many of these developments,
transforming how teachers design learning experiences, provide
feedback, support diverse learners and build engaging environments
both inside and beyond the classroom. From digital storytelling to
adaptive learning platforms, technological innovations have expanded
what it means to teach and learn English in today’s world.
In this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of
the most influential forces shaping the future of ELT. AI-driven tools
are increasingly being used to plan lessons, personalise instruction,
support diverse learners and manage complex classroom needs. At the
same time, these innovations raise important questions about pedagogy,
ethics, teacher agency and the evolving nature of classroom
interaction. To explore these opportunities and challenges, the
January 2027 special issue of FORTELL focuses on the theme “AI and
English Language Teaching.” We invite contributors to critically
examine how AI is reshaping ELT practice, research, teacher education
and classroom realities.
Some of the suggested sub-themes are:
 - AI-enhanced pedagogical approaches
 - AI-generated and AI-enhanced learning materials
 - AI and assessment
 - AI for inclusive education
 - Ethical use of AI in ELT
 - AI and classroom research
 - AI, creativity and critical thinking
 - Policy guidelines for AI in education
 - AI in multilingual/ multicultural language learning contexts
 - Teacher professional development in the age of AI
