Description:
Tasks and Expectations:
The Faculty is seeking applications from scholars who will make a
significant contribution to shaping interdisciplinary linguistics with
a strong focus on research and cooperation in conjunction with other
linguistic disciplines at JGU. The successful candidate will represent
the field of General and Comparative Linguistics with a typological
focus in appropriate breadth in both research and teaching and will
work closely with the professorship specializing in neurolinguistics.
Ideally, the candidate is willing to engage in interdisciplinary
collaboration, particularly beyond faculty boundaries.
Expectations:
in research:
- Empirically based modelling of crosslinguistic (especially
grammatical) diversity
- Contribution to linguistic theory formation on an empirical basis
- A focus on non-European and/or non-Indo-European languages
- Also desirable: expertise in fieldwork and/or data mining / LLMs
in teaching and supervision:
- Teaching on and developing didactically sound BA and MA programs
with linguistic content, especially in programs in General and
Comparative Linguistics
- Teaching subject-specific digital competencies in higher education
- Supervision of doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers
- Continuous commitment to the further development of teaching
formats and degree programs
- Active contribution to shaping the courses offered in linguistics,
taking into account current developments (e.g. in the areas of Digital
Humanities or multilingualism)
with regard to collaborative research and external research funding:
- Development of and participation in innovative research and
teaching networks at JGU and within the Rhine-Main Universities (RMU)
- Major external grant income for linguistic (collaborative) research
Further expectations:
- A cooperative and team-oriented working style and strong
interpersonal skills
- Willingness to take on responsibilities in accordance with JGU’s
leadership principles
- Active involvement in academic self-governanc
- German-language proficiency or attainment of an adequate
proficiency within three years of appointment
Requirements:
Applicants must fulfil the general legal requirements for public
service appointments pursuant to §49 of the Higher Education Act of
Rhineland-Palatinate. In addition, the following must be demonstrated:
Academic qualifications:
- A relevant doctorate and outstanding academic achievements beyond
the doctorate indicating a significant international profile in
Linguistic Typology
- Successful acquisition of external grant income
- International visibility of research
Teaching:
- Proof of excellent teaching skills and university teaching
experience covering an appropriate range of subjects
- Ability and willingness to teach in English (and, in the medium
term, in German)
The State of Rhineland-Palatinate and JGU pursue a concept of

presence of teaching staff as well as a general willingness to
actively develop one’s competencies.
