Subject: Call for Participants: A PhD Study on How Screen Reader Users Engage with Multimodal TikTok Algospeak

My name is erynn young and I am a PhD candidate at the University of
Amsterdam/Amsterdam Center for Language & Communication. I am
currently conducting the first phase of my PhD project on how screen
reader users engage with multimodal algospeak on TikTok and I am
recruiting participants for adapted interviews.
- The study invites you if you are a screen reader user (in any
capacity), use TikTok, are 18 years or older, and have working English
proficiency. Importantly, you do not need to disclose any details
about your screen reader use if you do not wish to do so.
- The adapted interviews entail a scroll-along session, expected to
last between 1-2 hours, during which you will scroll through
pre-selected TikTok content containing algospeak and discuss the
content with the interviewer.
- These sessions can take place in person (Amsterdam, Netherlands
area), or remotely through a video-conferencing platform. The sessions
can also be broken up into multiple, shorter sessions as needed.
- Participants will be compensated 20€ (or local currency equivalent)
for their contributions.
Please contact me (email: e.j.young at uva.nl) if you would like to
request more information about the project. If you are eligible and
interested, I invite you to participate and provide your insights into
TikTok algospeak! Please also share this with anyone who you think may
also be interested in participating and please encourage others in
your networks to share this call.
