The Organizing Committee of this Symposium is pleased to invite you to
the 1st International Symposium on evaluative language in social
media, which will take place on 19 and 20 November 2026 at the Applied
Linguistics Department of the Universitat Politècnica de València,
Spain.
The symposium will focus on evaluative language in social media.
Within this broader framework, four thematic panels will guide the
discussion: Gender: This panel explores how evaluative language
contributes to the construction and contestation of gender in social
media. Contributions may address the role of appraisal, stance-taking,
and labeling in shaping gender identities, reinforcing or challenging
stereotypes, and articulating feminist and queer perspectives in
online discourse. Emotions: This panel focuses on the evaluative and
affective dimensions of social media communication. It invites
analyses of how emotions are expressed, amplified, and strategically
mobilized through language. Hate Speech: This panel examines
evaluative language as a vehicle for hostility, exclusion, and
discrimination in social media. Topics may include the linguistic
features of hate speech, its implicit and explicit forms and digital
mechanisms for its detection, moderation, and contestation. Racism:
This panel addresses how evaluative language participates in processes
of racialization in social media. Contributions may explore discursive
practices that reproduce or resist racism, including coded language,
stereotypes and counter-discourses emerging from marginalized
communities.
Plenary Speakers:
The following plenary speakers have confirmed their participation:
 - Niall Curry - University of Birmingham
 - Maite Taboada - Simon Fraser University
The Organizing Committee encourages prospective speakers to submit
paper proposals (20 minutes) in line with the thematic panels of this
Symposium.
Each participant can submit a maximum of two proposals in English,
Spanish or Catalan from 1st July 2026 to 20 September 2026. The
proposals must be submitted at https://elsm2026.webs.upv.es.
