Multimedia and Multimodal Representations of Food: Pragmatic

Food is rarely just sustenance in media discourse; it operates as a
complex semiotic and linguistic system used to negotiate identity,
alterity, and cultural prestige (Mapes, 2021). Simultaneously,
enogastronomic promotion has emerged as a strategic, pragmatic tool to
manage the pressures of overtourism by redistributing visitors toward
less crowded, peripheral destinations. This panel bridges these two
dimensions, exploring the pragmatic implications of food
representation across media and its role in shaping the spatial and
social movements of modern travelers worldwide.
>From a pragmatics perspective, food discourse functions through
complex speech acts of invitation, persuasion, and distinction. These
representations often rely on aesthetic presentations, which serve as
shortcuts for cultural values or markers of localness and tradition.
By analyzing food as a discursive, multimodal, and multisensorial
tool, this panel uncovers how media representations, ranging from
cookbooks and manga to social media and official tourism portals,
shape our pragmatic competence in intercultural encounters and
influence how we understand and consume the “Other.” While welcoming
multimodal approaches, the panel maintains a core focus on linguistic
pragmatics, exploring how verbal interaction and textual discourse
anchor these diverse representations.
Key themes include: Stance-taking and Evaluation, examining how
discourse linguistically constructs authentic versus hybrid culinary
identities and slow food versus fast tourism hierarchies. Pragmatics
of Translation, exploring how culinary terms are adapted, borrowed, or
othered across linguistic and cultural borders. Multimodal Pragmatics,
analyzing visual imagery and text interaction triggering cultural
presuppositions, stereotypes, and the tourist gaze. Intercultural
Miscommunication, investigating conflicts between media-driven myths
and traditional, localized communicative rituals governing how a dish
is shared. Sustainable Tourism, using enogastronomic heritage as a
strategy to mitigate friction and socio-communicative distance between
residents, locals, and visitors. We warmly welcome diverse
cross-cultural perspectives.
