Journal: Reti, saperi, linguaggi - Italian Journal of Cognitive
Sciences
Issue: Beyond Diagnostic Boundaries Mentalizing, Theory of Mind, and
Cognitive Heterogeneity in Neurodevelopmental Conditions
Call Deadline: 18-Oct-2026
The Special Issue “Beyond Diagnostic Boundaries: Mentalizing, Theory
of Mind, and Cognitive Heterogeneity in Neurodevelopmental Conditions”
invites contributions examining mentalizing and Theory of Mind across
autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions, including ADHD,
developmental language disorder, intellectual disability,
developmental coordination disorder, dyslexia, tic disorders, genetic
syndromes, and related profiles.
The Special Issue aims to use neurodevelopmental diversity to
reconsider the architecture and development of social cognition.
Comparative, dimensional, developmental, and transdiagnostic
approaches are especially welcome.
Relevant topics include:
* explicit, implicit, spontaneous, cognitive, and affective Theory of
Mind;
* individual variation within diagnostic categories and overlap across
conditions;
* developmental trajectories and lifespan changes;
* language, pragmatics, narrative, irony, and figurative language;
* communicative intentions and embodied or non-verbal interaction;
* empathy, perspective-taking, metacognition, and social prediction;
* the relationships between mentalizing, executive functions,
perception, affect, and motivation;
* ecological validity and differences between laboratory performance
and everyday social understanding;
* compensation, masking, camouflaging, and alternative strategies;
* cross-cultural research, lived experience, and participatory
approaches;
* conceptual and methodological issues concerning neurodiversity,
disability, competence, and performance.
Original empirical studies, theoretical and conceptual papers,
critical or systematic reviews, and methodological contributions are
welcome. Empirical papers should clarify their implications for
broader models of cognition and neurodevelopment, while theoretical
papers should engage closely with relevant evidence.
The Special Issue will be published in *Reti, saperi, linguaggi –
Italian Journal of Cognitive Sciences*, a prestigious international,
interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal published by Il Mulino and
indexed in Scopus, Web of Science–ESCI, The Philosopher’s Index, and
ERIH Plus.
