Journal: Journal of Intelligence
Issue: Cognitive Foundations of Language Comprehension and Production
Call Deadline: 26-May-2027

We are launching a Special Issue entitled “Cognitive Foundations of
Language Comprehension and Production”
Language is central to human cognition and social life, enabling us to
understand others’ thoughts, communicate our own intentions, and
construct shared meanings across diverse contexts. Although language
comprehension and production often appear effortless in everyday
communication, they are supported by highly complex cognitive
processes. Successful language use draws on multiple cognitive
abilities, including attention, working memory, executive function,
social cognition, domain-general learning mechanisms, etc.
A longstanding question in linguistics and psychology concerns how
language is related to cognition. We are therefore interested in
discovering to what extent language depends on general cognitive
abilities, and whether there are some particular types of cognitive
development that are necessary for language acquisition. We are also
keen to understand how language experience might shape cognitive
development, and to what extent language influences our cognitive
processes. These questions constitute the central themes of language
and cognition studies and are directly relevant to our understanding
of the nature of language and cognition.
This Special Issue aims to collate interdisciplinary research
examining the cognitive mechanisms that support language comprehension
and production across development. We welcome empirical, theoretical,
and review articles focusing on neurotypical children, adults, and
older adults, as well as studies involving neurodiverse populations.
Submissions are encouraged to address the following questions:
 - How do domain-general cognitive abilities contribute to language
comprehension and production?
 - What cognitive mechanisms are essential for different linguistic
domains, such as word learning, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, etc.?
 - How do language–cognition relations change across the lifespan?
 - How can studies of neurodiverse populations inform theories of
language processing?
 - What methodological approaches can best capture the dynamic
interaction between language and cognition?
We hope that this Special Issue will shed light on current advances in
the study of language and cognition and provide a foundation for
future interdisciplinary research seeking to understand the nature of
language and cognition. We look forward to receiving your
contributions.
