The Spanish-speaking world is characterized by transatlantic mobility
and situations of intense language contact, in which Spanish comes
into contact with indigenous and minority languages while functioning
either as the sole first language or as one of several first
languages. This section focuses on these multilingual settings while
also welcoming contributions on second- and third-language
acquisition.
The aim is to combine systemic linguistic perspectives on language
contact with approaches from multilingualism and language acquisition
research. The focus is on the theoretical modelling of contact-induced
variation and hybrid structures, as well as transfer processes and
their significance for general models of linguistic competence. All
core linguistic levels (phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax and
semantics) are considered, with a particular focus on how they
interact at interfaces (e.g. prosody–syntax–pragmatics).
In line with the overarching theme of the conference, the section
addresses transatlantic contexts, such as Spanish in contact with
other locally rooted languages in multilingual communities or
diasporic settings in Europe, Latin America and Africa. Contributions
drawing on various theoretical approaches, such as generative,
usage-based and variationist, are welcome. Practical perspectives,
particularly those focusing on applied linguistics and
foreign-language pedagogy, are also encouraged, provided they address
systemic linguistic issues and thus promote dialogue between
theoretical modelling and practical application.
