Subject: Making Waves March 2026 Meeting

Making Waves is launching a new seminar series that, in addition to
prosody, also explores gestures. On March 25, Suzanne Aussems will
give a talk titled “Beyond stimulus looks: How to analyse infant
social looks and communicative gestures during looking-time
experiments”.
As always, we meet on Wednesdays at 15:00 (CET). We look forward to
seeing many of you there and to another lively discussion.
Abstract:
In the infant looking-time literature, linguistic stimuli are often
presented while infants’ fixation times are measured. Although such
implicit measures can capture relatively low-level associations (e.g.,
look-to-listen effects), using them to infer referential
understanding—namely, that infants recognize that what they hear
corresponds to what they see—would be an overinterpretation. To
address this issue, the talk will introduce a new coding scheme that
examines not only stimulus-directed looks (implicit measures) but also
more explicit communicative behaviours, such as social looks and
communicative gestures directed toward the caregiver. We will discuss
the implications of this multi-layered approach for interpreting past
findings, for designing future studies, and for the claims we make
about early language development.
