Abstract:
This manual takes EFL students on a guided journey to develop mastery
of English pronunciation. It explores systematic rules as well as
irregularities in the pronunciation of English letters, digraphs,
common affixes, and morphemes, and introduces the IPA phonetic symbols
for vowels and consonants and their realization both as independent
sounds and in different word positions. It also provides a
comprehensive phonetic description of English vowels and consonants,
highlights key pronunciation differences between British and American
accents, and examines pronunciation rules and processes that govern
connected speech. Suprasegmental features – such as intonation, pitch,
syllablification, and stress rules – are subsequently introduced to
help students pronounce words and sentences with greater accuracy and
naturalness. These pronunciation aspects are reinforced through
student-centered practical exercises in every section and chapter, as
well as assessment tests at the end of the manual. This structure
helps students evaluate their understanding progressively and
holistically. Accordingly, this manual can serve as an effective
practical teaching and learning resource for EFL spoken English
courses, especially as it gradually guides and supports students in
developing their speaking competence from beginner to a level
approximating native-like proficiency.
