Subject: Making Waves May 2026 Meeting
The upcoming meeting of Making Waves will take place next Wednesday,
May 13, at 16:00! (CET, please, note that this is an hour later than
usual). Serpil Karabuklu will give a talk titled “How to Capture
Differences in Nonmanuals: Behavioral and Computational Analyses”.
We are excited to share that this meeting will have a guest
discussant, Nick Palfreyman (University of Lancashire) and will be
BSL/English interpreted. We would like to thank Adam Schembri and his
SignMorph project for their support.
We look forward to seeing many of you there and to another lively
discussion.
Abstract:
Annotation and analysis of nonmanuals (face and body movements) in
sign languages remain challenging due to the lack of unified
annotation guidelines, the significant time and labor required, and
the nuanced differences in their realizations across sign languages.
In this talk, I will briefly review the current annotation practices
and labelling conventions for nonmanuals in the sign linguistics and
discuss what computational approaches can contribute to their
analysis. I will conclude by exploring how cross-linguistic
differences in nonmanuals can inform theoretical accounts in sign
language linguistics.
