Abstract:

Do you want to understand Korean culture more deeply?
This is a book to read, a book to learn from, and a book to teach
with.
Decoding Korea: From Potential to Blossoming is not simply a guide to
Korean culture. Written by a linguist specializing in pragmatics, it
asks a deeper question: Why has South Korea developed the way it has?
Why do Koreans ask your age within minutes of meeting you? Why is
jeong so difficult to translate, and why does nunchi matter so much in
Korean communication? What can ppali-ppali, chemyeon, heung, and han
tell us about the cultural forces behind South Korea’s remarkable
transformation?
Drawing on language, history, cultural psychology, and cross-cultural
analysis, Professor Chang Bong Lee explores both South Korea’s
remarkable achievements and the cultural tensions that came with them.
The book examines how some of the same cultural forces that
contributed to Korea’s rapid economic development, educational
commitment, collective diligence, adaptability, technological
advancement, and global cultural influence can also help explain
competition, conformity, hierarchy, exclusion, and social pressure.
Throughout the book, recurring Linguistic Reflections use Korean
words, expressions, and communication patterns as windows into Korean
ways of thinking and interacting. The book’s Review Questions,
Discussion Questions, and Group Activities further extend this
exploration, making Decoding Korea a valuable resource not only for
individual readers but also for teaching and learning.
For general readers around the world, the book offers a way to decode
South Korea beyond what can be seen on the surface. For learners of
Korean, it provides opportunities for deeper Korean-language learning
through cultural understanding. For professors and teachers, it offers
rich material for culture-language integrated teaching and can be used
in courses on Korean culture, Korean Studies, intercultural
communication, and advanced Korean language. For Korean readers and
learners of English, it also provides concepts and language for
explaining Korean culture to the world.
Rather than simply celebrating or criticizing Korea, Decoding Korea
seeks to understand both its blossoms and the roots from which they
grew.
Language is more than an object of study. It is one of the keys to
decoding Korea itself.
