Subject: Obituary for Professor Vinesh Y. Hookoomsing (1948-2026)


Professor V. Y. Hookoomsing has been a major contributor to the study,
development, and promotion of Mauritian Creole. Amongst other works,
he published in 1987, with Philip Baker, Diksyoner kreol morisien,
Dictionary of Mauritian Creole, Dictionnaire du créole mauricien.
Paris: L'Harmattan, and with Philip Baker and Guillaume Fon Sing in
2007, The Corpus of Mauritian Creole texts.
Professor V. Y. Hookoomsing has been instrumental in the development
of the writing system of Mauritian Creole, producing its initial
orthography "Grafi larmoni".
Professor V. Y. Hookoomsing was deeply engaged in linguistic and
social issues in the Republic of Mauritius. He is survived by his wife
and two sons.
