The Name Journal is a public-facing website exploring given names,
their meanings, linguistic origins, pronunciation, historical
development and related forms.
Its name lookup brings together information about individual first
names, while journal articles discuss topics such as how names change
across languages, why spellings vary and how name statistics are
compiled. Explanations distinguish a name’s linguistic origin from the
ancestry of an individual or family and acknowledge uncertain or
disputed etymologies.
The website distinguishes reviewed name profiles from short
automatically generated overviews. Automatic overviews are labelled,
link to the reference pages used and have not been checked by an
editor.
The resource is intended for general readers interested in names and
naming. It is offered for consideration as a public introduction to
topics in anthroponymy, rather than as a scholarly corpus or
peer-reviewed publication.
