ע\ع (Ayn\Ayn) Lookup, version 3.2.2, is a free multilingual
text-research browser extension with specialized support for Arabic,
Syriac/Aramaic, Hebrew, and Ge'ez/Ethiopic resources.
Linguistic applications:
The software provides a research environment for examining
multilingual texts. Users can select text from a webpage or paste a
passage into the application, then investigate individual words
through configurable dictionaries, encyclopedias, etymological
references, pronunciation databases, and other online sources.
Provider results are displayed within the research window, generally
preserving their original interfaces.
AynAyn transliterates Arabic, Syriac, Phoenician, and Imperial Aramaic
into Hebrew script. Arabic transliteration includes vocalization,
Hamza and Madda processing, ligature normalization, and the handling
of selected orthographic and morphological ambiguities. An optional
mode reconstructs aspects of Ancient Hijazi reading based on published
linguistic research. Syriac transliteration supports Eastern and
Western vocalization systems.
Additional facilities include cross-script dictionary lookup for
Aramaic, word-form generation for reference searches, Unicode
character inspection, lookup history, and concept-based multilingual
lookup through Wikipedia interlanguage links.
Platform and availability:
The extension is available for Chrome and compatible Chromium-based
browsers, including Microsoft Edge. An online transliteration
converter is also available without installation.
The software processes Unicode text. Text may be supplied through
webpage selection or direct input. Transliteration is performed
locally in the user's browser.
